Xabier Anduaga, Bel Canto Gala

VenueMunicipal House Theater Prague
CalendarMon 03 May 2027
Synopsis/Details

3 May 2027, 7:30 p.m.

Spanish tenor Xabier Anduaga, a native of San Sebastián (*1995), has been hailed by critics as a “world champion” (Seen and Heard) and as one of the most outstanding voices in today’s bel canto scene. In April 2023, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore—instantly causing a sensation. The evening turned into a triumph: standing ovations and enthusiastic responses from both audience and critics launched Anduaga among the most sought-after singers of his generation.

Since then, he has appeared regularly on the world’s most prestigious stages – including the Vienna State Opera, Madrid’s Teatro Real, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, London’s Covent Garden, the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro and the Donizetti Festival in Bergamo, the Opéra National de Paris and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, as well as Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and many other leading venues, to which he is repeatedly invited as a distinguished interpreter of the bel canto repertoire. Reviews in outlets such as Bachtrack, Opera Wire, Opera World and Forum Opera unanimously highlight his exceptional combination of technical ease and expressive intensity. Critics repeatedly point to his “brilliant and spectacular” high notes and the ease with which he moves through the extreme tessitura—most notably in Tonio’s legendary aria from Donizetti’s La fille du régiment, with its nine high Cs, which he delivers with effortless command and dazzling brilliance.

Xabier Anduaga won the prestigious Operalia Plácido Domingo competition in July 2019, and just a few months later made his debut in Prague at a concert presented by Nachtigall Artists at the New Town Hall. Since then, he has returned to Prague twice – in April 2022 and in November 2025.

At his fourth concert in the Czech capital, he will once again present his signature repertoire alongside the Prague Philharmonia: exhilarating arias by the masters of bel canto, where virtuosity, elegance, and dramatic drive come together in a unique musical experience.

Municipal House (Czech: Obecní dům) is a civic building that houses Smetana Hall, a celebrate concert venue, in Prague, Czech Republic. Its address is Náměstí Republiky 5, next to the Powder Gate in the center of the city.
The Royal Court palace used to be located on the site of the Municipal House. From 1383 until 1485 the King of Bohemia lived on the property. After 1485, it was abandoned. It was demolished in the early 20th century. Construction of the current building started in 1905. It opened in 1912.[citation needed] The building was designed by Osvald Polívka and Antonín Balšánek.

The Municipal House was the location of the Czechoslovak declaration of independence.

The building is of the Art Nouveau architecture style. The building exterior has allegorical art and stucco. There is a mosaic called Homage to Prague by Karel Špillar over the entrance.  On either side are allegorical sculpture groups representing The Degradation of the People and The Resurrection of the People by Ladislav Šaloun. Smetana Hall serves as a concert hall and ballroom. It has a glass dome.
